Nvidia to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, closing H1 2027
If you've been treating Hugging Face as independently operated infrastructure — the default place where open-weight models live and get distributed — the ownership assumption beneath that changed on September 3, 2026.
Nvidia announced it will acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion. The deal breaks down as $11.9 billion to shareholders and $1 billion in employee equity. According to Nvidia's announcement, the Hugging Face library holds 3 million AI models and 500,000 datasets. The platform runs 1 million applications. It serves 18 million developers. More than 200,000 companies use it. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory review. Jensen Huang wrote in Nvidia's announcement that Hugging Face will continue operating as an open platform. The commitment covers open-source and open-weight models across all hardware providers.
If the open-weight models in your stack pull from Hugging Face, the entity owning that distribution layer changes when the deal closes.

For operators
Nvidia acquires Hugging Face — model-sourcing ownership shifts from independent to corporate subsidiary, closing H1 2027
If your pipeline sources models from Hugging Face — through the transformers library, the Inference API, or direct weight downloads — the ownership structure beneath that sourcing is changing. Hugging Face transitions from an independent company to a Nvidia subsidiary. The projected close is the first half of 2027.
The immediate operational question is whether that shift triggers a review in your organization. Vendor concentration policies are the first place to look. Compliance documentation that names model sources is a second. Any contractual or regulatory requirement to track changes in third-party AI infrastructure suppliers is a third.
Huang committed to maintaining Hugging Face as an open platform across all hardware providers. That commitment is Nvidia's stated position at announcement, not a contractual or regulatory guarantee. If your compliance framework distinguishes between independently owned and corporate-subsidiary model sources, the H1 2027 close is your planning horizon.
